User Guide

Getting Started

Before you run ShareIt, you should consider the following server preferences:

  • Where will files be stored?
  • Who is allowed to access the device?
  • Are users allowed to edit files and folders?
  • What are the network settings for the server?

Configuring The Server

Open ShareIt, and select the 'Settings...' option in the 'Tools' menu. You will be presented with a dialog containing three options pages:

  • The System page contains options to set the location of the root filesystem, network configuration and session defaults.

  • The Users page allows you to enable and configure anonymous (guest) user access, and edit user accounts.

  • The Misc. page contains contact and message information.

The System Page

The Root directory is the location where all FTP files and folders will be stored. Depending on your requirements, you may want to make this a common location, for example "My Documents," or a dedicated location on a storage device. Users cannot access data in other folders, and this folder will always appear as the top "/" directory to FTP clients.

The network (TCP/IP) port and maximum number of users can be set through the Connection options. If you select a port other than 21 (the FTP default), because of application conflicts or firewall restrictions, your users will have to reconfigure their FTP client software to connect to your server. When the server is operating at full capacity it will respond to new connections with a "maximum number of users allowed" message and terminate the session.

The Timeout options allow you to adjust the amount of time a user can be idle (no activity or transfers) and the maximum number of login attempts the system will allow before it disconnects a user.

The Users Page

The Users page contains a user profile editor and options to set anonymous (guest) access to the server. ShareIt distinguishes between these types of users so that you can define privileges for guest and regular users.

There are four privileges that can be set: write, overwrite, delete and rename. For example, you may want to allow users to create folders and upload files but not overwrite existing files. In this case, you would select write privileges and not overwrite privileges. There delete and rename privileges work in the same manner.

TIP: the FTP commands associated with the privileges are documented in the Profile editor dialog (see below).

To create or edit a user profile, click the 'New' or 'Edit' button in the 'Profiles' options.

The Profile Editor

The profile editor allows you to edit user name, password and privilege information. Note that ShareIt will allow user names up to 32 characters and passwords up to 8 characters. To save your changes, select the 'OK' button to return to the 'Users' page.

The Misc. Page

The Misc. page contains options to set the administrator password and the login message file. Note that the administrator's email address is displayed as part of the FTP 'SITE' command.

Starting The Server

To start ShareIt, select the 'Start' option in the 'Server' menu. You can verify the server is running by observing the fields in the 'Activity' display.

Stopping The Server

There are two methods to shut the server down: hard and soft. A hard shutdown will terminate all current FTP connections immediately, whereas a soft shutdown will stop accepting new connections and allow the existing connections to end gracefully.
